Bel Canto Singers
Bel Canto Singers
The Bel Canto Singers are the most advanced choristers in PYC. Members range from grade six and above and achieve this level only by progressing through the Troubadours and Talisman choirs. Rarely does a singer audition directly into this choir. Bel Canto Singers perform complex music, often in several foreign languages on the same program, representing numerous styles and cultures.
Bel Canto Singers must exhibit a strong commitment to the chorus, a willingness to learn music independently, and an eagerness to travel. Leadership qualities and exemplary behavior are equally as important as musical talent for a Bel Canto Singer.
Members of Bel Canto Singers are often recommended to audition for positions in national honor choirs. The entire chorus has traveled nationally and internationally and has created an outstanding reputation for PYC in musical and educational circles. The “Bels” are frequently called upon to perform in collaborative performances with the Pittsburgh Opera and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Members of both the Bel Canto Singers and Talisman choirs are required to participate in the Choral Arts Music Program (C.A.M.P.). This 5-7 day over-night camp program generally takes place during the month of August. During C.A.M.P., choristers begin to learn the challenging new music that will be performed during the year. It is also a time for fun, and many choristers form bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime!
The Bel Canto Singers rehearse on Monday evenings with Shawn Funk, Artistic Director of PYC from 6:15-8:15 PM in the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University.
