Schedule an Audition

PYC’s free and comprehensive two-hour group audition process is conducted very much like one of our weekly rehearsals. After physical and vocal warm-ups, the students are introduced to a new piece of music, and together, they learn its rhythmic, melodic and structural components. As students gain confidence, they are invited to sing a section of the piece for the director. Throughout the audition, students are observed and evaluated on their attentiveness and maturity as well as their innate and learned music skills.

During the audition, parents attend an informative session presented by PYC’s administrative staff. Here, we will explain what to expect as parents of a new PYC chorister, and we will answer any questions you may have! A group of PYC’s current choristers and parents are usually on hand to help with the auditions and are always willing to provide their perspective on what it is like to be a member of PYC.

“As you know, our daughter was quite anxious about auditioning in front of the other children and Katie, Jimmy, Amanda and others made her feel welcome and comfortable. In my opinion, this was such a direct, positive reflection on the work the choir does with the children not just in music, but the overall growth and development of the child! What mature young people!”

A Proud Parent

Submit Audition Form

The first step in becoming a PYC chorister is to audition! Once the online Audition Form is submitted, you will receive an email confirmation from our Chorus Manager.  This email will include such things as directions, parking instructions and any other important information you may need.

Audition Day

Arrive a few minutes early so your child can check in and receive the audition materials.  If you have not previously submitted the Audition Form, you will be asked to complete it when you arrive.  Make sure your child is well rested and ready to sing!  It’s not necessary to dress up for the audition. Casual school clothes are just fine!

Audition Results

1-2 Days Later

Audition results are typically emailed within 48 hours.  Most children are placed in our entry level Troubadours.  Occasionally, an older student with previous training will be placed in the mid-level Talisman choir.  Rarely is a student placed in the advanced level Bel Canto Singers – but it has happened.  Sometimes, we suggest a session or two in our Neighborhood Training Choir program or a week of our Summer Singers Day Camp and request to hear the child again at the next audition.

1-2 Weeks Later

Offers to join PYC must be accepted within 10 days so that we can have everything in place by the time your child arrives at the first rehearsal.

Practice Leads to Performance!

2-3 Months Later

In no time at all, your child will be performing with the region’s premier choral ensemble for young singers.  Prepare to be “wowed”!
