Volunteer Opportunity:

Board Member

Pittsburgh Youth Chorus seeks community leaders who believe in the power of music education to serve as Board Members For 35 years, Pittsburgh Youth Chorus (PYC) has been a leader in vocal music education in the Pittsburgh region. Serving approximately 225 students in year-round programming and 200 more through special events, we strive to inspire and empower the young singers who participate in our programs, preparing them for lives of personal and public leadership.

PYC seeks new Board Member nominees for the 2021-2022 season. In addition to providing governance and oversight for the organization, members of PYC’s Board are instrumental in developing and implementing PYC’s strategic plan, developing financial/human/organizational resources, and sharing PYC’s mission with the community.

In order to strike a balance of skills, backgrounds, and personalities on our Board of Directors, PYC is especially interested in individuals who:

  • Have a background in finance, law, fundraising, and/or digital media.

  • Can represent neighborhoods within Pittsburgh city limits, as well as the surrounding areas to the south, east, and west.

  • Can represent the diversity of the Pittsburgh region with respect to race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, and ability; due to the racial/ethnic makeup of our singers, PYC is especially seeking board members with Black, South Asian, and/or East Asian background; however, all qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

  • Have a strong sense of initiative and a willingness to take the lead on new projects.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sincere belief in the importance of music education

  • Serve as an ambassador for PYC in the greater Pittsburgh region

  • Willingness to introduce PYC to organizations and individuals who may help support and/or further its mission

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills

  • Oversee and contribute to the implementation of PYC's strategic plan

  • Attend business meetings (bi-monthly), concerts, and events

  • Participate in Board committee(s) and support fundraising efforts

  • Ability and/or willingness to learn how to read financial reports and budgets

PYC is proud to have a Board in which 100% of members make a fiscal contribution to the organization. There is no minimum requirement for giving; all members give at a level that is personally meaningful to them and within their means, and all contributions - fiscal and otherwise - are highly valued!

Qualified candidates should email a resume with a brief statement of interest to PYC’s Executive Director, Lee Saville-Iksic (lee@pittsburghyouthchorus.org).
